To Ilse

I was your birthday present,
an unwanted gift
bestowed by your family.

They thought you needed a soulmate,
reckoned I met the bill,
and clicked on send.

Liking your profile,
I went along with the wheeze,
curious to see what would happen.

Soul-mates in cyberspace!
You hated the idea,
scolded the instigators.

But somehow it worked,
because we twinned
as writers and poets.

Now, having exchanged myriads
of our writings, and even met,
we have your birthday here again.

May you sing and walk in the sun,
and may we keep nourishing one another
with poetry, musings and gentle words.
