Speech Therapy

Until I helped you revise for the exam
I didn’t know I was voicing fricatives and plosives.

Your textbook names the sounds:
e.g. the b in bin is bilabial.
the d in din alveolar.
the v in vim labiodental.

I toss consonants at you
to test your phonology;
when you can’t name the v in vim
you clutch your head and utter plosives.

At the session’s end, I say ‘Fine,’
speaking the F in a voiceless labiodental fricative,
and give you what I hope will be
a reassuring bilabial kiss.
